Welcome to Weight is Enough!

Hi, blog buddies!

Welcome to Weight Is Enough, a new part of the HelloRoss family! In an attempt to enrich my life by living up to my potential and connecting more with all of you, I'm trying something new around here.

Think of HelloRoss.com as the main "network" with other "channels" all aimed towards helping us connect and live a better life. Weight Is Enough is just one of those channels.

Let's get started...

I have spent my entire life hoping, wishing, dreaming of & working towards 4 things: love, career, family & health.

And, as I get older, it becomes clearer each day that, for the most part, there's not too much one can do to control any of these.

That is, of course, except for health. And, boy oh boy, have I always had an issue with my health. Most specifically, my weight.

I know my personal struggle with weight is not unique. Most everyone I know has had the same issues with weight.

Mine began as a child. Growing up fat is just as difficult as growing up with anything else that makes you "different" than everyone else, and the scars of that shame live with me still today.

It wasn't until after my father died that I decided to face my dragon and appear on a television show called Celebrity Fit Club. I knew the accountability that came with being weighed in weekly on national television would force me to really take the process seriously.

I did. And it worked! I lost an insane amount of weight and everything changed - the way I interacted with the world and the way the world interacted with me. It was fanfreakingtastic.

But it couldn't last. I was eating less than 1,500 calories a day and working out nearly every single day and - I'll never forget this - the moment I ate my first carb, it all starting falling apart.

Let's face it, carbs are delicious - nachos and cheese plates and carrot cake and, and, and...

So, as the years rolled by, I added more and more to my own rolls.

And now, as I type this, I have no idea how much I weigh. I know it's not what I did at my highest, but I know it's nowhere near my lowest, either. I need to get back on track, but I feel lost.

I start my days well - thinking about it in the shower and then look myself in the mirror thinking, "Today. You'll begin today. Only eat salads and lean meats. Go to the gym. You've done it before. You know what you need to do. Today. You'll begin today."

But then noon comes around and I'm running to a meeting and a sandwich is easier to grab than a salad on my way out the door and, oh sure, thanks, I'd love a couple pretzels and, yeah, okay, sounds fun, I'd love to grab happy hour after work and... crap.

Tomorrow, take 2. Promise. But it's an endless cycle.

And that's what this process is about - ending the cycle, doing it in a healthy way and finding accountability with all of YOU!

So help me. Let me help you. Share with me.

I'm going to document my process - with pictures, text and video - and share it with all of you. But I want you to do the same. And, luckily for us, the age of technology makes it very easy to do just that!

Please make your own videos, take your own pictures, write your own stories and email them to weightisenough@helloross.com!

I will post many of your emails here on WeightIsEnough.com to help me, you & all your blog buddies!

Let's get healthy together, gang, whether it's for the first time or all over again.
WE CAN DO IT!!!
What do you say?
:)

  3. Life Without Carbs - It is easier than I had imagined. In early July my doctor said I was pre-diabetic. Yuck!! So I educated myself and took diabetic nutrition classes at the local hospital. I found out what was the amount of carbs that were safe for me to eat and have stuck to it.

Since July 1st I have lost 27 pounds!! My glucose level has decreased 22 points and is just a hair over 100 now. My goal and my doctor's goal is for me to lose 25 more pounds. I now know it will happen. My fasting glucose level will continue to slide under 100 into the normal zone. I'm eating nuts, a cheese stick,, or an apple for snacks. I've said goodbye to most breads, pastas, and sugar, but there are a lot of low carb products that are helpful.

Ross, this was a great idea. I'll share more later.

  5. Hi Ross ~
I am in my fifties and I have struggled with my weight all of my adult life. I have lost weight and gained it back and MORE. Like Richard in Tucson, I was also told I was "pre-diabetic". Well, that hit me like a ton of bricks. I am now exercising and eating healthy and I have lost 42 pounds since last spring. It is a struggle every day. But, with each temptation I ask myself if it's worth it. do I really want to jeopardize my health to eat a candy bar? I look forward to special occassions and go ahead and have what I want (in moderation). But, I have to remind myself that every day is not a special occassion and I need to keep on track with my goal. I also know that muscle burns more calories than fat, so that keeps me walking at least three times a week. I'm hoping that this time I can keep it off. I think the fact that I was very close to being diabetic has helped me realize that I need to do this if I want to have a healthy and long life.

  6. My weight problems started when I was 7. sigh. I have lost and gained about 800 pounds in my lifetime. sigh. I was a lucky recipient of a shirt on Inside Dish in June and it was too small. It's still too small, but since July 20th, I've lost 53 pounds. I still have a loooooong way to go, but I'm doing it. I'm focused and doing what it takes to be healthy. It feels different this time, than all of the other times I've lost weight. I can recognize now, that all of the other times, I was really on a diet. And this time I'm not. I'm counting my calories in and my calories out, I'm doing my best to be really active, but this time, it's about my health. I turned 40 in January and even though my weight has been a disaster all my life I was the picture of perfect health. Turning 40 made me realize that it was just a matter of time before my body was going to start breaking down. I don't want that so I'm doing something about it. Ross, I'm so pleased with these changes at HelloRoss. Thanks for always being there for us.

  10. When you focus on eating well and exercising the weight issue seems to take a back seat.
When you focus on the 'weight' it's a struggle.

I love this idea Ross... but I wish it could be called... Exercise is Enough or Life balance is better..... and not focus ont he weight.

Either way... I wish everyone success and happiness.

  11. Charlie, LIFE BALANCE...yes, that's perfect! From what you have said Ross, that is a PERFECT title for this. Again, thanks for thinking of us Ross, I know so many of us appreciate what you do and share.

  13. Congrats on everyones weight loss! It is harder to lose as we age. It's all about carbs for me as well, so I try and limit them. I will no longer punish myself if I slip up because that's a given.

I am trying to incorporate MORE movement in my day because I sit too much at work.

I have learned alot by watching Dr. Oz. He says he doesn't care what your weight is! However, he cares about the size of your waist. If it's over 31 for a woman & 35 for a man he is concerned, and if a cardiologist is worried then we should be about ourselves too.

I am with Tuna Man it's all about "Life Balance" do what works for you ♥

  15. Oh Ross....I think a lot of us can relate to the weight struggle.
So thanks for starting your own "channel" on it!! Maybe this will help motivate me even more to lose the weight that I should :)

I have about 40 pounds that I would like to lose. But more importantly, I just want to get healthy. Feel better. You know- all that good stuff.

I'm currently a little less than 200 lbs and about 5'6" (& 33 years old)....it's weird when I look at myself, I don't think I look as bad as what others might think :/ I'm kind of beefy (and sadly have big boobs- sorry to share but they must weigh a lot :) I'm about a 12/14 which I don't think is that big but I still need to lose the extra poundage.
I just started running (when I say run, I mean a SLOW jog) and I'm determined to run a 5K in the spring.

I'm kind of like Lemon Deb (congrats on the 42 lbs!) in that I eat pretty healthy (most of the time) but totally overeat. And my night time eating is a problem. Oh yea and emotional eating. Total emotional eater.

Wow- there's my story and I'm sticking to it :)

My baby turned 20 weeks old yesterday and it is getting to the point where I really should not say oh i just had baby, I had a few to many pounds on me before this baby because I have a 3 year old. This morning I woke up and said I am going to be good today, which turned into a couple handfuls of peanuts and candy corn...(It taste like an effin payday!) anyway you are inspiring me to suck it up and do it. ahhhhhhhh

  17. Ross, first off the additions to your site are awesome! Second, have you ever tried using the Nike sportband? It is amazing. If you have Nike+ shoes you can track all your runs and upload them on the Nike website on your own personal page. You can set goals and join challenges with other runners. In the beginning when I started using it I was by no means a runner but once I began setting goals I have been running 3 to 5 miles everyday at the gym. It has helped me so much. I tell everyone who is not wild about working out that they should try it because its the one thing that forces me to go to the gym. Okay, well thats it for now, good luck to everyone on beginning a new healty lifestyle and to everyone who has been at it for a while KEEP IT UP!!! I am right there with you!

  18. Last year I lost twenty pounds by eating healthy, not starving myself, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, less beef more fish and chicken AND (and this is a BIG one) WALKING everyday, first for twenty minutes and then I worked up to an hour.

October 2008, I tweaked my knee making the bed and found it painful to walk to I stopped. Boy was that a mistake. I am lucky that I only gained back five pounds during the last year, but have not started walking and that is BAD.

Now that you have thrown down the gauntlet, I will begin walking again, to start 20 minutes four days a week!!!! Anyone up for joining me? The body needs to move, it is an important element to a healthy lifestyle. Twenty minutes!!!! Come on gang let's do it, how hard can it be?

  19. Love the new channels ross! I can really relate to this one. Im going to be turning 20 this month and i have been struggling with my weight my entire life. High school was my breaking point, my cholesterol was over 210 at 14. Its hard to admit but i tried starving myself and realized mother hubbard what am i doing! I then lost 18 pounds and now have gained a few back. im at a plateau of stressfl eating becuase of school. Any suggestions?

  20. Great Erika, I hate walking alone. See you on the trail tomorrow!!!!!!

  21. Ross this is great. I think this is a great tool to help people be accountable and also a sounding board for ideas, insperation, tips, and when no one else gives you an atta boy, you can get it here.
Like alot of people I have struggled with weight all my life. Food has always been a friend. I have also tried lots of diets the most succesful being weight watchers and overeaters anomous. But gained it back plus extra. In Sept I heard about the Carpenteria Triathlon. My wife and I went and watched it. my goal is to do the mini one in Sept 2010. It consists of 500 meter swim in the ocean, 10 mile bike ride and a 3 mile run. I have started training for this. I swim at the community college 2 nights a week,80-90 lenghts. I am also jogging on the tredmill at the gym , I am up to 2 miles in 30 mins. this did not happen overnight.I am 47 years old my starting weight in August 299lbs I am 272 today. They say eat less move more thats my goal. Some days not so good on the eating. But I have been consistant with the exercise.
Erika good job on working on the marathon. when i started jogging I couldnt go farther than 5 mins. My goal for the marathon that I want to do is just finish before the 3 hour time limit. It will happen. at least thats how I feel today.

  22. Hello Erika and All - One Small Step -- I did it! I even exceeded my goal of twenty minutes and walked this morning for 31 minutes, yes, I'm counting that odd one minute.

Someone across the street walking her baby smiled and waved, it was probably Erika, both of us too busy to stop and chat.

Tomorrow will be an off day and then back on trail on Saturday. Feel free to throw stones if I don't come through on my promise.

  26. I'm a little old fat lady. Once upon a time I lost 68lbs with WW and kept it off about 10 years. Thought I would never have any trouble again. Boy was I wrong. Sweets are my medicine. Anything that is bad in my life can be treated with sugar and or carbs. I exercise, Curves and walking on the beach almost every day. I eat the right foods in the right amounts BUT (or should I say BUTT) I "supplement" with goodies. Now I am struggling to get more than 100 lbs off. Finally it is taking its toll. My hips and muscles are crying out and that interferes with the one thing I do right, the exercise. Today, thanks to you I will do better and as they say, "Just for today......" Ross you are more than precious and I wish you well with your on going struggle. It is a lifetime of choice. Let's hope we make more good ones.

  27. I have been over weight since I was in the second grade. I know your pain growing up fat, and I tried every diet in the book to try to take it off. After I graduated high school in 1994, I watched a show hosted by Susan Powder, I think that was her name. She inspired me! I started walking and watching my calories, I lost 50 pounds in 3 months! But then I lost my gallbladder a few months later, due to the fact that I LOST 50 POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS! Anywho, I gained all my weight back within a year. I gained and lost so many times, but never that much. But in July it hit me, I have to make a life style change, I don't wanna be the fat girl anymore. I have started exercising, and eating right. As of this morning I am 14 pounds down. I have been stumbbling lately, but reading your blog today has given me more strength. Come on team Ross, lets get this weight off!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I had a thought after I wrote this......One problem that I have with keeping my weight off is that I flat out do not know what to eat most of the time. I do great for breakfast, oats or whole wheat toast. But once dinner time gets her I am at a loss. I don't like fish, beef or pork. And I have been finding bones and grissle in my chicken and turkey, so I am about ready to go vegetarian. The sad part of the lack of meat is that I am not a big veggie fan, and I know that carbs like me way to much.

To my point. What do you think about making a section for healthy recipes? Everyone can share their favorite breakfast, lunch or dinner, heck even snack recipes?

  29. YAHOO Artichoke Annie!!! Funny, I do have a baby (7 months old) :)
I'm going "running" with my neighbor tonight! (My run= brisk walk)
I'll check back in after I go.

jrpublishers- i love the idea of recipe sharing. i'm a vegetarian (well, i eat fish so i guess that makes me a pescatarian :)
and congrats on your weight loss....and everyone else's as well!!

    WE CAN DO IT :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks all for the support, you know what they say, "it takes a village". Some of jrpublishers'comments made me think about a program I watched on TV not too long ago. I can't remember who it, it could have been on Charlie Rose. But the crux of it was how difficult it is today to get into the healthy eating routine because we are bombarded with absolute junk being sold to us. They said it was harder to give up eating poorly than it was to quit smoking, so that kind of puts it into perspective.

I say whatever works for a person is what they should do as long as it is not gimmicky. We eat so much more today than we need to, because it is so available, plus we are induced to eat in ads in magazine and TV. Everything is depicted as so delicious, so easy, so satisfying.

What was that Seinfeld episode? - Master of our own domain???? We need to take control of our own selves, support each other and let the food industry 'eat cake'.

Tonight for dinner I had, salmon, but then I like most fish and I steamed a combination of FRESH turnips, carrots and yams. I seasoned with salt and pepper and some butter, I swear it was delicious. One thing I think is important about vegetables and tasting good is that they are FRESH, frozen and canned just doesn’t taste the same.

Of course I have it a bit easier as I am cooking for myself and don’t have to satisfy the tastes of others, if I run across a good recipe I will pass it on.

  31. Ever since Halloween Oct 1 LOL, I have somehow decided that my weight is just another costume lol I know that sounds crazy but for some reason it doesn't make me feel bad about my size, and I have so much confidence. However, I do believe that I can work it off, and I know in my heart that Halloween its not my everyday thing unlike most folks in San Francisco lmao (I meant that literally; people here like to dress up for no reason). Anyway I just wanted to share....

  37. I went out last night and bought some portabella mushrooms. Now the question is, what to do with them, I have never had portabella mushrooms. I seen a recipe that they can be used like a burger. Sounds interesting. Ok, it is passed luch time, guess I'll give it a try, and eat some carrots and strawberries on the side.

I am glad others like the idea of recipe sharing, I hope Ross likes the idea too!

  38. i like to marinade porto mushrooms in balsamic vinegar.
but yes, eat it like you would a burger. maybe add some low fat cheese. or roasted red peppers. sauteed onions.

or slice 'em up and saute them with other veggies you might like. put the veggies over cous-cous.

  39. thanks to you Ross, yesterday was a fine day. I went for a walk..30min and slow...but a walk. Made better food choices, thinking of you. And now for today. One day at a time. I hope more people catch on to this site and make comments. It helps to read others struggles. Now for breakfast, two eggs fried in Pam, two pieces of whole grain toast..YES with 2tsp butter and 1tbl whole fruit jam, and coffee with non fat creamer and real sugar (come on we are talking 16 calories, no biggie)..one meal at a time. What are you all having for breakfast. Let's share ideas

    ReplyDelete
  40. fets, I have had the same breakfast, since July, at least 5 days a week. I make a bowl of oats, stir in a tablespoon of ground flax seed, a tablespoon of peanut butter, and 2 tablespoons of dark chocolate chips. It gives me approx. 400 calories to get my day started. And it keeps me full until lunch.

  41. Hi everyone! My dad was just diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic. We work together everyday and so we are doing this together. For him it is keeping him healthy and on the right diabetic diet plan and for me I think it will help me eat healthier and lose the weight I have gain since my wedding. I am larger than I feel comfortable being. That is the main thing for me. i don't want to be a stick I just want to feel comfortable in my clothes again! I am scared to step on a scale. I think by doing this together we will stay motivated. Find a friend to help so you have the accountability to someone other than just yourself. Becuase I know I can talk myself into anything including a wendy's combo meal!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Amy- I understand about the wendy's meal thing! The problem with me was I let it get out of hand. Now I look at the signs on the road and think if I eat that ill feel so guilty afterwards, and i don't like that guilt. If the craving of a wendys meal comes around think about how you'll feel afterward. I've been doing that and havent had fastfood since March! And Im a college student which blows my moms mind:) You can do it!!

  43. Ross,
This is the greatest idea for support for healthy lifestyles. I am 66 but of course look and feel half that (humble me) and I love to hear others best advise on staying a healthy weight. I agree with so many that balance is the key to success! Healthy fats like avocadoes, bananas and nuts are necessary to the balance. I count calories and try to keep a balance of protein, good carbs and healthy fats. I have a schizophrenic battle with myself nightly about the exercize but the good me usually wins so I can stay feeling young and energetic!

  45. I just posted a message to the Pop Culture blog, but thought some of it was appropriate for the Weight is Enough blog also. Some aspects of growing older just SUCK. Metabolism slows down but eating habits and appetite stay the same. A bad combination. Fat genes kick in ( a convenient excuse I use). A real shocker is when you put on fat in places you never did before. Bummer. To prevent more accumulation and to loose the "middle age spread" , I believe in a well balanced diet , calorie counting, along with exercise, I've been told 30 minutes daily. It also sucks that the fat burning beneficial effects of exercise are not permanent and have to be practiced continually. The good news is that at least exercise can be fun. I love to exercise to some fast rock music because if I keep up with the fast beat it puts me into the cardio high intensity range ( well above the fat burning range) and if I am listening to a slower beat song I still am in the fat buring range. And afterwards I feel great Just yesterday I heard how exercise positively affects ones mood and the positive effects can last up to 12 hours or more. I also believe in weight lifting and cross training too to get a balanced workout .

    ReplyDelete
  46. jrpublishers...yum...sounds like a big cookie for breakfast..tomorrow for sure. Now lets hear some dinner suggestions. I have been eating only protien and veggies for dinner. One of my favorites is a salad made with various lettuces, a chopped up apple, one ounce of blue cheese, one oz. chicken (or more) and hidden valley ranch dressing lite, 2 TBL..oh ya and an oz of walnuts. Amounts can vary depending on your daily calorie count (or point count if you are a WW member)

  47. WIE Buddies and walking partner Erika: Just checking in for this Saturday, Nov 7. Another "I did it, so can you day!" Just got back from my walk, extended a wee bit, 36 minutes total for this day. Really felt good, nice to have a minute cushion. Tomorrow will be an off day, then Monday a walk day. Every other day will give me the four times a week the doctor wants, plus I am already extending the time, so that is good. I have ground turkey in the fridge, not sure how I will fix it but will let you know. Later....

  48. There was a man on Dr Oz the other day. He went vegetarian for 30 days and lost almost 30 pounds. He walked 10,000 steps a day as his exercise. I'm going to try that. I figure I can do any thing for 30 days. Hugs to all! ~ DianeC in Oregon

  49. AA: way to go on the walking!!!
Fets: that salad sounds tasty (minus the chix part since I don't eat that). Love the apple and blue cheese.
jrpublishers: what did you make with the port mushrooms??

Just checkin' in.....I didn't walk Saturday but we did go for an almost 2 hour walk in the woods on Sunday :) It was a slow paced walk but at least I was moving, right?!?
Today (Monday) I went for run (aka: slow jog). Plus, I walked to the grocery story with my 7 month old. It's only like 10 minutes (one way) but still, it's something.

My eating has been okay, not great but certainly not horrible. I like what the trainer Mike said about writing down what I eat. Weight Watchers is all about that. One of my old WW leaders used to say (all the time), "If you bite it, write it!" He also said, "thrill foods should NOT be fill foods." :)

    How's everybody else doing???

    ReplyDelete
  50. Erika: I ended up slicing a port mushroom in half, and sauted it in olive oil. Then I took a whole wheat pita, split it in half, and filled it with mushroom, tomato and a little cheese. I placed that into my olive oil pan and toasted the pita. It tasted really good, but an hour later I got sick. I don't know if my body doesn't like portabella's or if it was a coinkidink, but I am scared to tray any more!

I have been walking more, and have started on my wii fit again. But I got on the scale this morning with 0 weight loss. :-( But I'm not going to let the scales get to me, I am chugging along still.

  51. Yum, that sounds so good (that sandwich). But sorry that it made you sick. I wonder what it was?!?

And don't worry about the scale. If you are eating right and moving more, the scale will change.
How often do you weigh yourself?

    Keep on going :)

  52. I wanted to give us a laugh for the day, because I know we have a tendancy to be too hard on ourselves. I know I am, I've been stressed out this week because I go to the doctor next week. I don't want to weigh the same as I did a year ago! So, this made me laugh and I hope it does anyone interested in watching:

We will do it gang! But in the meantime smile.......

  53. I tried the portabella's again today. I cut one up into little bit size pieces and sauted in olive oil with scallions and cherry tomatoes. While I did that I was cooking some whole grain spaghetti. Then poured it all together, and topped with a little spaghetti sauce and parmesan cheese. Yummy. Lets pray my belly likes it today!

    Jojobits: Very funny clip!

  54. Lol thanks jr, he cracked me up too!

I am not a mushroom fan but the way you cooked it sounded tasty. I know people that use those instead of bread, like for a hamburger bun.

I am the type that has to watch my carbs. Today I have albacore tuna with pickles, a hard boiled egg & cheese for lunch. I lose weight fast on a low carb way of eating (notice how I don't say DIET) but must be careful because if I stray it will creep back up.

    We can do it!

  55. Oh, Ross! I was just watching you on Chelsea Lately the other night thinking how great you looked still after being on Celebrity Fit Club such a long time ago. It made me realize that I needed to get off my fanny and lose this weight that keeps creeping on.

I'm an extremely busy mom with a over full time job (I'm a teacher with many extra curricular duties) and 2 part time jobs who really dislikes exercise. However, I'm nearly 60 pounds overweight now and starting to feel it healthwise.

Thank you for this blog and for some inspiration. I will hopefully be emailing you a great success story in a few months.

    Heather

  56. How is everyone doing with their weight loss goals? Just thought I would try to keep the weight loss section alive. I can't say I have been doing to great lately. Thanksgiving killed me, I gained 5 pounds! But I had lost 4 of the 5, but then after working my butt off, and eating veggies, I gained a couple of pounds. I was ticked and stopped exercising and stopped watching what I ate, and I now have all those 5 pounds back on. Today is the day again people. I even started a blog of my own, in hopes that it will keep me in check. If anyone wants to come and read my day to day struggles, visit me at http://runningfromobesity.blogspot.com !
